English Courses



Our partner school in Bournemouth, which is accredited by the British Council and a member of English UK, has
systems for ensuring that students receive personalized attention.

The school aims to provide the kind of linguistic training and support that they need in order to make rapid progress and quickly attain a good degree of fluency and accuracy in English.

Students will study in small, multinational classes (the maximum number of students is 14, although the average number is 10) along with students of a similar age and language ability.

 

Course type

There are several courses available:

1. Standard General English course (20 lessons = 15 hours per week).


2. Intensive General English course (28 lessons = 21 hours per week).
This course includes 8 lessons of communicative skills practice per week. This course covers the same material and uses the same methodology as the General English Standard Course. However, in the afternoon on four days per week, there are two lessons of additional communication practice. These extra lessons are designed to give students the chance to develop their confidence in speaking and listening.

3. TOEIC Exam Preparation Courses (24 lessons = 18 hours per week).

4. Cambridge Exam Preparation Courses (24 lessons = 18 hours per week).

5. IELTS Exam Preparation Courses (24 lessons = 18 hours per week).

6. Business English (English for Business) (20 lessons = 15 hours per week).



Aims of the Business English Course

To enable students to communicate effectively in a range of business situations and have the linguistic resources available for the study of a business-based degree course.  To give students the skills necessary for them to perform effectively in English in a business context.  Students are encouraged to apply any business knowledge and experience that they might have as they work through the course material.  Course books will be supplemented with material taken from other sources.

Testing and Progress Monitoring
There will be an initial placement test for entry to our partner school's course, coupled with a needs analysis session for student-teacher orientation.  There will subsequently be:
* continuous assessment on performance and progress.
* monthly progress assessment tests.
* one Final Assessment Test.

Students will have the opportunity to discuss their progress with their tutor following each assessment.  The centre's academic staff will be happy to provide any additional counselling that might be necessary.

E
xternal Exam: Cambridge BEC Vantage Level (ie. Level 2)
This exam is aimed at learners who wish to obtain a business-related English language qualification.  Currently there are 3 levels (Preliminary, Vantage and Higher), each of which assesses students in the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking in a business context.  Students may prepare for the Cambridge BEC Vantage-level (ie. Level 2) examination within the Business English course.

7. Medical English (English for Medicine) (20 lessons = 15 hours per week).
Clients following the Medical English course will improve their knowledge of the sort of English required in the fields of human biology, medical science, nursing, etc.  Improved language skills can advance their career and allow them to communicate fluently with their counterparts (and perhaps work) in other countries.


8. Tourism and Hotel Management English (20 lessons = 15 hours per week).
This course has been designed to prepare students for work in the tourism and hotel service industries.  At the end of the course, students should be able to communicate effectively in a range of business and tourism-related situations.


Entry Requirements
Please contact us to confirm the course entry dates.  The minimum age for entry to these courses is eighteen.  Also, for some courses, you will need an upper-intermediate level of English for entry to the course.  You may be required to take an aptitude test before you arrive at the school to judge whether your standard of English is sufficient for your chosen course.  You may wish to follow a course of English Language Studies (General English) before beginning an exam or specialist course to make sure that you gain the maximum benefit from your studies.

 


Maximum Group Size
There is maximum group size of fourteen, in order to allow optimum interaction between group members and the teacher / lecturer.  The minimum group size is four, so that you benefit from certain projects and class activities that require a high level of student input.

Assessment and Certification
If
you follow a course at our partner school, you will receive a certificate on satisfactory completion of all coursework and assessment pieces.  By prior arrangement with the Director of Studies, the school will also supply periodic progress reports.

General English Levels
The school runs English Language Studies (general English) courses at six levels:
1. Beginner (advance notice required! Please tell us if you are a beginner).
2. Elementary.
3. Pre-intermediate.
4. Intermediate.
5. Upper-intermediate.
6. Advanced.

Each level should take approximately 120 hours to complete, although by special arrangement, short courses can be arranged that take approximately 40 hours to complete.











Built into every student's course are the following:

Placement test. This is designed to enable the school to gauge the approximate level of a student and to place him or her in a class along with other students of similar ability.

Needs analysis. This is used to find out what students need and would like to learn on their course.

Skills development. Development of the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking through meaningful practice.


Task-based activities designed to improve fluency, such as discussions, pair and group work, roleplays, problem-solving, and so on.

Systems work. Focus on and consolidation of the systems of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Students will learn and use new language forms and vocabulary through practice in contemporary, realistic, everyday situations.

Supportive error correction and constructive feedback.

Learner skills development. The school aims to teach students effective ways of learning, from efficient note-taking to ways of storing and activating vocabulary. We would like to encourage students to use self-access resources, such as the library, video room, listening materials, CD-Roms and internet facilities that they will find at the school.

Progress tests. These are designed to show how well a student is learning new forms and vocabulary, and how well he or she is able to apply new skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Tutorials. To provide two-way feedback, so that teachers can pass on hints, tips and advice on how best to study, as well as address any problems shown up by students? performance in class and in their progress tests. At the same time, students can ask for help in areas that are particularly important for them.

Homework. An essential part of every student?s course ? consolidates classwork and provides extra practice in the skills and systems.

Academic counselling. Distinct from the tutorials programme, the academic counselling that we provide aims to maximize every student?s potential, so that he or she could:
Transfer to another course, such as an examination preparation course or an English for Special Purposes course.
Apply to go on to study at a college or university in an English-speaking country.
Seek work in an English-speaking environment (where visa regulations allow this).
Preparation for external examinations. Where possible, we would like to help every student to prepare for an external examination, so that he or she will be able to return home with an internationally-recognized qualification. Our partner school can also help with this.
